US House votes bill that could potentially ban TikTok in the USA

On Saturday, April 20, 2024, the US House voted on legislation regarding TikTok’s potential ban. If not sold, TikTok could face prohibition in the US. The bill, passed 360-58, advances to the Senate. Negotiations extended the sale timeline to nine months, with a possible three-month extension.

The major reason behind the bill is national security related to processing of data, including large amounts of personal data of US citizens by China’s ByteDance, the owner of the TikTok app, and its links with Chinese authorities.

If the bill goes through Senate, the US will be among the first countries to officially completely ban TikTok for all uses. But other countries have already forbidden usage of TikTok and download of the app on professional and business-related devices. Citing security concerns, the European Commission  barred its staff from using TikTok, on February 23rd, 2023, and the same ban was followed by the European Parliament on March 1st, 2023.
